Biggest (Hitting) Surprise So Far:

Stephen Vogt: OAK · C · 32 G · 101 AB · 9 HR · 30 RBI · .337 AVG · 1.093 OPS

The 30 year old catcher is already on pace to set new career highs in pretty much every single statistical category. His 9 home runs have already matched his career high and his 30 RBI have him 5 back of his career best. Hard to see Vogt maintaining this torrid pace for the entire season, but he should continue to be solid offensive contributor for the A’s. Either way, it should be entertaining while it lasts.

Biggest Surprise (Pitcher):

Michael Pineda: NYY · 7 GS · 5-0 W/L · 2.72 ERA · 46.1 IP · 54:3 SO/BB · 1.01 WHIP

Trick or treat is a good way to describe Pineda’s professional career to this point. An All Star as a rookie with the Mariners in 2011, Pineda was traded to the Yankees for the ice creme sandwich better known as Jesus Montero. Pineda then went without pitching until 2014 because of a variety of shoulder and arm ailments. When he did return in 2014, Pineda then became more famous for becoming the guy who wore pine tar as a necklace during a contest against the Red Sox, a move that not only got him thrown out of the game, but also suspended by MLB. Even when he returned from suspension, Pineda struggled again with injuries and was limited to 13 starts and 76.1 innings. This season however, Pineda has been straight up dominant. Recently named the AL Pitcher of the Week (2 GS · 2 W · 0.60 ERA · 15 IP · 22 SO), Pineda’s 16 strikeout performance against the Orioles tied a Yankees record by a right-handed pitcher. Pineda is one of the main reasons that the Yankees are 8 games above .500 and atop the AL East. They will need him to continue his Cy Young caliber performance in order to maintain that lead.
